It is an advanced skin rejuvenation treatment that uses ultra-short laser pulses to target fine lines, scars, enlarged pores, and sun damage. The laser operates in the picosecond range, stimulating collagen and elastin production without causing significant heat or damage to the skin. The treatment is suitable for the face, neck, décolleté, and hands, resulting in smoother, firmer, and more even skin tone. It is minimally invasive, involves only mild discomfort, and typically requires 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Temporary redness and dryness may occur, but the recovery time is minimal.

What is fractional laser?
Fractional Pico Discovery is a fractional non-ablative laser system that works so fast its speed is measured in picoseconds. This more than halves the time it takes for the laser to deliver its energy, doing so with much greater safety and minimal side effects. With Pico technology, less heat, less discomfort, and less potential for side effects occur. Note that not all Pico lasers on the Danish market are of the same high quality as Pico Discovery.
The energy from the Pico laser creates a controlled injury in the skin. This initiates a natural regeneration process in which new connective tissue is formed in the treated area. The result will be a fresher, younger appearance, with skin showing improved glow, more even skin tone, and surface texture.
Fractional laser can advantageously be used for skin rejuvenation, uneven skin tone, minor wrinkle reduction, and mild skin tightening, as well as all types of scars—including flat (atrophic) acne scars, stretch marks, surgical scars, and burn scars (all scars are treated on medical indication).
At Apex, we also work with fractional ER: Glass 1540nm laser as an alternative to the Pico system for the same indications. The two laser systems have the same effect but use different mechanisms. The 1540nm system is a warm laser, while the Pico system (described here) is a cold laser. The Pico system has an advantage for darker skin types and for those who experience acne breakouts after treatment with the 1540nm laser.
A typical treatment course may consist of anywhere from 3 to 10 treatments with a minimum interval of 4 weeks between sessions for optimal results, depending on the condition being treated.
Which areas can be treated?
We treat both the face and body with fractional laser.
How does the treatment work?
It is important not to be tanned when coming for treatment. Therefore, avoid sunbathing and tanning beds for 4 weeks prior to treatment, as well as self-tanners on the area for 2 weeks prior.
The treatment can be performed under local anesthesia (numbing cream). You arrive 45 minutes before treatment to allow the anesthesia to take effect. Local anesthesia is not necessary when treating a few small scars.
If you want to apply the cream yourself at home, you can buy a numbing cream over-the-counter at the pharmacy. Apply a thick layer of cream, making sure the white color is clearly visible. Cover the area with cling film ("Wita wrap") to make the anesthesia more effective.
The treatment itself feels like a prickling heat, which may be felt on the skin for a few hours afterward. You can optionally take 1 gram of paracetamol about 1 hour before the treatment to reduce any discomfort.
We always recommend using sunscreen both before and after the treatment, SPF 50+ including UVA and UVB filters.
What is the effect of the treatment?
The treatment effect depends on the individual's ability to regenerate new connective tissue. The effect of treatments is generally good, and a long-lasting effect is expected, which decreases with the natural aging process. We always recommend maintaining results with a follow-up treatment annually.
It is important to set expectations before the treatment. No refunds are given for the treatment.
Who cannot be treated?
Pregnant women
Relevant allergies
If you have tattoos or permanent makeup in the area to be treated
If you have keloid formation
If you have an active skin disease or skin cancer
If you take medication or herbal supplements causing photosensitivity or coagulation disorders
If there is an active infection in the area, including active herpes
Possible side effects?
The skin becomes red and warm immediately after treatment, often feeling like mild sunburn. Some patients may experience swelling, especially in the face, where significant swelling around the eyes can occur. These symptoms disappear within a few days to a week. Ice packs can be used on the treated area for 10 minutes every hour for the first 4 hours if needed.
Because the skin remains intact despite its appearance after treatment, the risk of side effects is low, as this is a non-ablative treatment. Only in cases of scars treated on medical indication may sub-ablative treatment occur, which can cause pinpoint bleeding. Occasionally, wounds and blisters may form if heat development has been particularly high, but this is temporary.
In rare cases, infection can occur. The risk of skin damage, such as scarring, is significantly lower with the Pico laser compared to traditional lasers. When removing pigment, temporary worsening of pigment color may occur for a few weeks.
In some cases, acne breakouts in the treated area can be experienced. For those few, preventive use of salicylic acid peeling immediately after each laser treatment can be applied. For side effects related to peeling, see customer information on peeling.
Avoid vitamin A creams and peels for up to 1 week after treatment unless these are prescribed as part of the treatment plan.
Sauna, intense physical training, chlorine, and swimming in the sea are also discouraged for the first 24 hours.
New skin forms, so it is important to avoid sun exposure for at least 1 month after each treatment to prevent reduced treatment effect and pigment disorders.
