What is a pHformula peel?

A peel is a skin treatment using a chemical solution. Peels can reduce irregularities in skin pigmentation, increase the formation of elastic fibers in the dermis, stimulate the production of new skin and the skin’s extracellular matrix, which binds moisture in the skin.

Peels can be used for acne, rosacea, acne scars, fine wrinkles, and pigmentation changes (including melasma). There are several types of peels: very superficial peels usually performed by cosmetologists, and medium-depth peels performed by specially trained nurses and doctors.

Apex uses superficial peels with Retinol, Jessner peels, salicylic acid peels, pH peels (only in Aalborg), as well as TCA peels.

Chemical peeling from pHformula is particularly effective against acne, rosacea, sun damage, and mild forms of melasma.

The best results from a peel are achieved on pre-treated skin. The skin heals faster after the peel, and there is less risk of side effects. Pre-treatment lasts at least 2, preferably 4 weeks. Post-treatment with creams from pHformula enhances the results, reduces side effects, and prolongs the effects of the treatment.

We recommend a course of 3 treatments with intervals of 2–4 weeks.

How is the treatment performed?

The skin must be free of makeup. First, the skin is cleansed with a cleanser, then degreased with alcohol, and then the skin is "primed" with a product that improves absorption of the peel.

The peel itself is applied to the skin with a large cotton swab — often in several layers depending on skin reaction. Chemical peeling from pHformula stings and burns when applied, but this is short-lived. It is self-neutralizing and does not need to be washed off after application.

Finally, POST recovery cream from pHformula is applied, which is best suited for at-home aftercare. After a peel, the skin appears whitish on the surface with moderate to strong redness. Immediately after the peel, the skin feels warm.

In the following days, the skin tightens and becomes very dry. Peeling, in mild or stronger degrees, usually starts on day 2 or 3 and lasts about 2–3 days. After about one week, the skin returns to normal.

For all types of peels, it is important to avoid sun exposure completely while the skin is affected after treatment — that is, as long as there is mild redness, which otherwise can lead to dark pigmentation.

We always recommend using sunscreen both before and after treatment with SPF 50+ including UVA and UVB filters.

What are the effects of the treatment?

After a course of 3 treatments, the result is visibly smoother and fresher skin with less acne and pigmentation, and an improved skin texture. The result is essentially permanent, but the skin, like in all people, will continue to age, and new acne lesions or pigmentation changes may appear, which will require maintenance treatments.

It is important to have a clear agreement on expectations before treatment. No refunds will be given for the treatment.

Who cannot be treated?

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women

  • If you have relevant allergies (including acetylsalicylic acid, lactic acid, and citrus fruits)

  • If there is an active infection in the area, including active herpes

  • If recent surgery has been performed in the area

  • Use of isotretinoin must have ended at least 1 month before treatment

  • Avoid shaving on the day of treatment in the area to be treated

Possible side effects?

Immediately after peeling, there is a risk of infection and redness of the skin. The treated area will be very sensitive to the sun, so strong sunlight should be avoided and high-factor sunscreen used. You may also experience discomfort when the facial skin contacts hot water, best described as a sunburn-like sensation.

Recommended aftercare (creams) to optimize treatment results

After treatment, we recommend using effective creams that support the effects of your treatment.

  • Post recovery cream from pHformula (day and night) — deeply moisturizes normal, oily, and sensitive skin; restores natural moisture balance; has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

  • Mineral Radiance (sun protection) — 100% ultra-light mineral sunscreen for all skin types; enhances the skin’s natural tone and gives a beautiful glow; waterproof, paraben-free.
