It is a non-surgical solution that restores volume and reduces wrinkles by combining an immediate volume-building effect with long-term stimulation of the skin’s collagen production. Radiesse consists of microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in a gel, which provides an instant lift and contouring while simultaneously activating the skin’s own collagen production over time. This dual action results in smoother and firmer skin, with effects that can last up to 18 months. Radiesse is effective for treating deep facial lines, enhancing cheek and jaw contours, as well as rejuvenating the neck and hands.

What is Radiesse?
Radiesse is a semi-permanent hybrid filler, which also falls under the category of biostimulators and has been on the market since 2004. The product is approved for medical use in both the USA and the EU.
Radiesse consists of sterile, fine microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite in a sterile hyaluronic acid-based gel with glycerin. It is designed to provide a lifting and firming effect due to its high viscosity and elasticity. Thanks to the soft, moldable gel, an injection with Radiesse provides both an immediate result and a long-lasting effect, as the microspheres stimulate the skin’s natural collagen production.
Radiesse is effective for both wrinkle filling, as well as lifting and contouring, and is perfect for treating early signs of aging. The product usually lasts up to 12 months, but will eventually be completely absorbed by the body.
Treatment with Radiesse must only be performed by dermatologists and plastic surgeons due to its longer-lasting effect compared to non-permanent fillers.
Which areas can be treated?
Radiesse can be used for treatments on the face, neck, and hands.
How does the treatment work?
The product is injected into the desired treatment area using a very thin blunt needle. The treatment is not entirely pain-free—a stinging or burning sensation may occur but will subside quickly. A numbing cream is not necessary, as the product contains an anesthetic. The treatment involves minimal discomfort and is easy to manage.
You should avoid touching the treated area for 4 hours after the procedure to reduce the risk of infection. Makeup on the treated area is also discouraged during this time.
Until any swelling has completely subsided, you should avoid extreme heat such as sun exposure or saunas. Direct cooling with ice i
What is the effect of the treatment?
The effect of the treatment is individual and depends on many factors, such as skin structure and the desired level of perfection.
Due to its dual action, the HA (Hyaluronic Acid) component provides an immediate lifting effect, while the CaHA (Calcium Hydroxyapatite) spheres trigger continuous collagen stimulation by activating fibroblasts. As a result, new collagen fibers may already be present one week after the treatment. The expected duration of the effect is approximately one year.
During a possible follow-up appointment, once the product has settled into the tissue, it is possible to add more on top of the initial amount if further effect is desired. However, additional product should not be expected free of charge. It is important to align expectations before the treatment. Refunds for the treatment are not offered.
Who should not receive treatment?
Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals
If you have relevant allergies
If you have infections in the area: acne, herpes, or other local infections
If you have connective tissue diseases
If you are taking immunosuppressive or blood-thinning medications
At least 4 weeks should usually pass between Radiesse and laser treatments. Always talk to your practitioner about combining treatments.
Possible side effects
Immediately after treatment, there is a risk of mild to moderate swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising. These reactions typically disappear within a few days and in most cases within a week.
Infection is rare. If signs of infection appear, contact the clinic, as antibiotic treatment may be necessary to reduce the risk of permanent scarring. Some people may develop a pimple-like rash in the treated area, and cold sores (herpes) may be reactivated.
In some cases, Hyaluronidase may be used to dissolve the injected product. However, you must not be allergic to wasps or bees, and you must stay in the clinic for 30 minutes after injection to monitor for allergic reactions.
In very rare cases, skin redness may last for several months, or granulomas (nodules of connective tissue) may form under or within the skin. Very rarely, permanent changes that are difficult to treat may occur. In extremely rare cases, product may be injected into a blood vessel, causing sudden darkening or whitening of the skin that worsens over hours. It is crucial to contact the clinic so treatment can be initiated immediately. This also applies in cases of visual impairment.
Failure to treat visual impairment can, in the worst-case scenario, lead to eye damage and, in extremely rare cases, blindness. This side effect has never been seen in Denmark but has been reported abroad.
Note: Your dentist should be informed if you have received Radiesse treatment around the mouth, as it may be visible on X-rays.
