Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness, visible blood vessels, pimples and, in severe cases, thickening of the skin. Although the exact cause is unknown, factors such as stress, spicy foods, alcohol and temperature fluctuations can worsen symptoms. Kleresca® treatment helps manage rosacea by using a specially formulated gel that is activated by fluorescent light to penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular repair. The treatment is painless for most people, but a slight tingling or temporary redness may occur. The recommended treatment series consists of 4-6 weekly sessions, followed by maintenance treatments. Kleresca® can reduce redness, irritation and breakouts, improving the overall quality of the skin.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face. It is characterized by redness, visible blood vessels, pimples, and sometimes thickening of the skin. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may occur in periods of flare-ups and remission.

Causes and Symptoms:

The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic factors, environmental influences, and reactivity in the blood vessels of the skin. Treatment may include prescription medication, skincare, and lifestyle changes to reduce symptoms and prevent worsening.

Symptoms of rosacea may vary from person to person and can include:

  • Redness (Erythema): Persistent redness on the face, especially on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin.

  • Visible blood vessels (Telangiectasia): Small visible blood vessels on the skin’s surface, often in areas of redness.

  • Pimples (Papulopustular rosacea): Red, swollen pimples or small bumps that may resemble acne. These can be painful and pus-filled.

  • Thickened skin (Phymatous rosacea): Thickened skin, especially around the nose (rhinophyma), giving it a bumpy or enlarged appearance.

  • Eye problems (Ocular rosacea): Irritation, dryness, redness, gritty sensation in the eyes, eyelid inflammation, and vision disturbances.

  • Sensitivity: Skin sensitivity to certain skincare products, cosmetics, sunlight, heat, or cold.

Symptoms often come in periods of flare-ups and remission and may be worsened by triggers such as stress, alcohol, spicy foods, and heat.

Treatment:

Rosacea treatment with Kleresca® for the face works by applying a special gel that interacts with the light from the Kleresca® lamp. The gel, applied to the entire face, contains chromophores that are activated by the lamp’s light and converted into fluorescent light. This light penetrates the different layers of the skin and stimulates the cells.

The treatment is usually painless, but some may feel a mild tingling sensation in the skin, which indicates that the treatment is working. It only takes a few minutes to complete, and you can continue your day as normal afterward. Immediately after the treatment, rosacea symptoms may temporarily worsen, and pigment spots may become more visible, but this usually disappears shortly after. We offer a soothing cream for the skin after treatment.

After several treatments, you will typically see improvement not only in visible rosacea symptoms such as facial redness but also in the burning and stinging sensations associated with the condition.

We usually recommend a series of 4–6 treatments, one session per week. Afterward, you may consider follow-up treatments once or twice a year, depending on your individual needs.

What can worsen rosacea?

Rosacea can be aggravated by different factors. Triggers include spicy foods, alcohol, heat, cold, stress, and certain skincare products. For some people, even sunlight and wind can trigger symptoms. Identifying and avoiding these triggers can be key to managing rosacea and preventing flare-ups.

How does it typically develop?

Rosacea usually develops gradually through different stages. It often begins with facial redness and visible blood vessels, which may progress to pustules, pimples, and thickened skin. Over time, this can lead to persistent redness and other visible symptoms. It is important to understand that rosacea is a chronic condition, but with proper treatment, symptoms can be relieved and the condition kept under control.

How to best care for rosacea-prone skin?

To effectively care for skin with rosacea, it is important to follow certain guidelines. Use skincare products that are mild and hypoallergenic, and avoid those containing alcohol or harsh chemicals. Wash your face gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser. Protect your skin from the sun by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with high SPF. Identify and avoid personal triggers that may worsen your symptoms. Finally, Kleresca® treatment is an effective way to reduce rosacea symptoms.
