PIGMENT TREATMENT: GUIDE TO SUN DAMAGE, MELASMA & UNEVEN SKIN TONE | APEX HEALTH & AESTHETICS

Many people find that their skin develops dark spots or uneven shadows over time, but effective pigment treatment requires an understanding that pigmentation is not just one single condition. It is a complex challenge where the correct diagnosis is crucial for the success of your pigment treatment.

At Apex Health & Aesthetics (SKODSBORG, COPENHAGEN, AARHUS, and AALBORG), we always begin with a professional assessment. The wrong treatment can actually worsen certain types of pigmentation—which is why we prioritize safety and expert guidance above all else.

THE FOUNDATION FOR A GOOD RESULT

Clinical treatments cannot stand alone. Without the consistent use of SPF and a gentle, stable homecare routine, results will often be less durable. We always start by looking at your habits and your current skincare, after which we build the professional treatments on top.

Note: Results may vary, and suitability is always determined during a pre-consultation.

TYPES OF PIGMENTATION, CHARACTERISTICS, AND PIGMENT TREATMENT:

1) Sun damage and sun spots (Sun-induced pigment)

Characteristics: Flat, sharply defined brown spots on sun-exposed areas such as cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, and the back of the hands.

  • Possible treatments: Jessner peel (typically 1-3 treatments), Cosmelan program, or selected IPL/laser treatments.

  • Downtime: Jessner (2-5 days of peeling), Cosmelan (redness/peeling for 1-2 weeks), IPL/laser (spots may darken briefly).

  • Important: New, rapidly changing, or bleeding spots must always be assessed by a doctor. We do not treat suspicious lesions.

2) Hormonal pigment (Melasma) Characteristics: Soft, often symmetrical brown shadows on the cheeks, forehead, or upper lip. Typically triggered by sun exposure, pregnancy, or birth control pills.

  • Possible treatments: Cosmelan program with strict SPF, customized peels, or SkinPen microneedling (performed only in Aarhus).

  • Important: Light/laser is used with great caution for melasma, as the wrong approach can worsen the condition.

3) Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) Characteristics: Darker spots appearing after irritation or breakouts (e.g., acne or eczema).

4) Genetic/Congenital (e.g., freckles) Many find freckles charming, but if you wish to reduce them, we can utilize SPF, peel cycles, Cosmelan, or selective IPL/laser after a professional assessment.

5) Vascular (Redness and small vessels) Technically not pigment, but it can make the skin tone appear uneven. Targeted light/laser treatments can reduce visibility here.

WHAT HELPS ACROSS THE BOARD?

  • SPF year-round: UV light can activate pigment formation and lead to relapse. Reapply as needed.

  • Gentle routine: Avoid over-exfoliation. Too many acids or scrubs can weaken the skin barrier and increase redness.

  • Patience: Improvements happen step-by-step, as pigment is often located in multiple skin layers.

Where does TCA come in? TCA peels are performed by our dermatologist for specific indications (e.g., severe sun damage). Downtime and strength are customized individually.

YOUR SAFETY AT APEX HEALTH & AESTHETICS

We prioritize medical safety. All journeys begin with a pre-consultation with a licensed healthcare professional, where we map out your needs at our clinics in Skodsborg, Copenhagen, Aarhus, or Aalborg.

We always follow current legislation regarding reflection periods and informed consent, ensuring you feel completely secure throughout your treatment at Apex Health & Aesthetics.

  • Pre-consultation: Mapping of pigment type, patterns, and habits.

  • Plan: SPF and homecare combined with relevant treatments in the most effective order.

  • Follow-up: Continuous adjustment based on skin response and season.

The minimum age is 18 years, and reflection periods are always observed. In case of clinical suspicion of skin cancer, the lesion will not be treated—instead, we refer you to your own doctor or our dermatologist.
